DIVORCE AND UNVESTED STOCK OPTIONS

A divorce attorney referrred their client to our office because the financial issues were beyond the attorney's knowledge base.  My task was to discuss the vested and unvested stock options and come up with a plan to divide these assets.  The solution was really quite simple.  I explained how to create an excel spreadsheet to calculate the marital portion of the unvested options including the taxes owed, how to label the columns and the Excel formulas to use.  The client will create the spreadsheet and will then forward it to me to review.  I will then forward it to the attorney and they will draft the legal documents.  VOILA! Settlement achieved.

While some people can be intimidated by numbers and financial topics, dealing with the finances of divorce is our specialty.  If you are divorcing, I encourage you to take the time to really understand the numbers and secure your financial future.  Don't just sign a document to get the divorce in your rear view mirror.
