blindfolded people in divorce

A client in my Brentwood, TN office told me her attorney suggested she hire a CPA to help her calculate alimony.  Her attorney told her that alimony is based primarily on two factors:  What does she need? and What can her husband afford to pay?  We can understand the concepts of need and ability by understanding monthly expenses.

By completing our expense worksheet with 140 items, clients will very clearly understand their need and ability.  Not sure why her attorney thought she needed a CPA to complete an expense worksheet... So, I asked my CPA his thoughts.  He told me he his CPA skills are best suited to completing tax returns not, expense worksheets.

If you are divorcing and alimony is a concern, focus on understanding your monthly expenses to understand your need and your spouses ablity to pay.
