CO-PARENTING POST DIVORCE AND WHAT YOUR KIDS WILL REMEBER ABOUT THE DIVORCE
CO-PARENITNG POST DIVORCE AND WHAT YOUR KIDS WILL REMEMBER ABOUT THE DIVORCE
I past client called my Brentwood, TN office today today and gave me an update on their post-divorce life... Their divorce was over about fifteen years ago and the first couple years were difficult for co-parenting. She and her ex-spouse have worked through the "kinks" and are now co-parenting quite well. She mentioned her kids are now 16 and 18 and everything seems to have fallen into place. I was pleased to hear the good news. But was suprised by one of her comments. She said "You told me that the kids would not remember the early years and tension between their dad and me. You were right".
I made this commnet based on raising my own children. As now 20 somethings, they have no recollection of the very expensive vacations we took to the Grand Canyon, Bryce National Park, Disney World or vacations when they were in elementary school. While, I certainly enjoy the memories of these trips, they really can't remember much at all... So, if you are divorcing with young kids, take solace in the fact that they likely won't remmeber these less than pleasant early year divorce memories. Nature has a way of protecting children and this benefits the family.
