Divorce and how to approach a settlement

divorce signs for alimony

I was in my Brentwood, TN office yesterday and a client asked me about alimony and how it was determined.  I told her it is all about the numbers and gave her my expense worksheet.  She looked at me puzzled and said, "I thought alimony was a formula".  I explained that child support is a formula and a simple calculation.  Alimony is based primarily on one spouse's need and the other's ability to pay.  That is why the expense worksheet is so cirtical.

If you are considering divorce, take the time to undersatnd the numbers.  You will be more calm and confident about your future if you focus on the numbers.  Your ask for alimony will make sense and your case will be settled sooner.  That is good news for your mental health and bank account.
